I Still Got It

I still don’t suck when it comes to running apparently. Yes, that statement seems a bit random, so let me give you some context. A friend and I did a 1600 meter race today (essentially, it’s a mile and I cannot recall which is actually longer), and I ran a 5:11. I really wanted to break five minutes this year when this was planned, but we didn’t do it in August like we had originally intended, and I haven’t been running much as of late (school and sleep tend to have a bit higher priority). Not that running in August would have mattered much since I wasn’t running much more then than I am now.

I fully expected to run poorly today, but I managed to impress myself (and the person I was running against I think). The first 400 meters was at 1:17, second at 2:34 (1:17, so even splits there), and I couldn’t hear my timer because the wind was blowing too hard for the third one. Not quite negative splits (that’s running faster each lap), but still pretty darn good as far as I am concerned. I was shooting for 1:15 – 1:20 for each lap so that would put me at 5:00 – 5:20 for an overall time, so I still hit my goal.

The worst part of it all is that there was some piece of equipment jettisoning out into the first two and a half lanes on one of the turns that we didn’t see until we were already started. By then it wasn’t worth moving them (we had already ran about 250 meters at race pace). I figure we would have shaved off two to three seconds on our times easily if it wasn’t there (along with the benches in lane one in the straightaway before the start/finish line). Oh well, there’s always next year though, right?

We even had two “cheerleaders” come out to root us on, although I can’t say I ever heard any cheering as I went by. The wind was loud though, so maybe they were just cheering softly?

Mozilla Interns Jump Out of a Plane!

Woooooooooooo!

Today six Mozilla interns jumped out of a plane to go skydiving! Michael (mwu), Jeff (Waldo), Alex (abuchanan), Adam (ispiked), Reed (reed), and myself were all in attendance at Adventure Center Skydiving, Inc. in Hollister, California. Yes, we all jumped.

I have to say that it was unlike anything I have ever experienced. The best way I can describe it is just “awesome”. I cannot think of anything else to say about it because it’s such an amazing experience.

The plane was pretty cool since it had a polycarbonate door that you could see right out of. I happened to be sitting right next to it (which also meant that I was the first of the tandem jumpers to go – that was neat). When it came time to jump, I have to admit that I was a bit nervous. Then, there I was standing on the edge of the plane waiting for my Jumpmaster to push us off while looking down at the ground and noticing just how high up I really was. Off we went! A note to anyone who ever intends to skydive – don’t open your mouth for too long. It dries out really fast, and your cheeks puff out really fast.

I’ll let the video explain the rest.

Here’s a Google Video of the fun Google Video doesn’t like AAC audio, which is the only thing I can encode it to with iMovie. Drat…

A higher quality version of that isn’t sufficient for you. (40 MB)

Harry Potter

I just got back from Harry Potter, and I have to say that I’m greatly disappointed. One might even say that I am even upset about it. I feel that the movie didn’t do the plot justice. It was really lacking details, and compared to the book, was rather boring. I could go on ranting about it, but I think I’ll leave it at this – the movie wasn’t worth it. If you haven’t seen it, I suggest you save your money.

Clearly Disappointed,

Shawn

RAM Upgrade

One day last week I was trying to run Windows Vista in a Parallels VM, watching my computer grind to a halt. It was paging, and boy was it painful. I decided it was a good idea to upgrade my Macbook’s RAM from 1GB to 2GB. I figured that this would cost me around $200-300, which I wasn’t to happy about. After actually looking for RAM, I found out that it would only cost me $90 which included the price of shipping and tax. I was ecstatic, and quickly purchased it.

Well, I finally installed it today, and I must say that my computer feels faster. Maybe it’s also because I had to reboot it (first time in at least a week), but things just feel faster. Now I can run Firefox in gdb and do other things without my computer freaking out and dying on me. It’s quite nice!

With that said, if anyone wants to buy a 512MB stick of Macbook RAM off of me, let me know as I now have two of them.

Burn Baby, Burn

firefirefirefirefirefirefirefirefirefirefirefirefirefirefire
So, my download manager code landed today, and oh boy did it burn! For those of you not involved in the Mozilla community, that simply means that it didn’t go over so well. Camino, Seamonkey, and Windows builds of Firefox had issues compiling the source code into a runnable program. I finally got that worked out, but now my unit tests are failing. The worst part is that they are failing silently with no output as to why (this is uncommon, and usually bad). This makes figuring out what is wrong extremely difficult.

So, I’ll be playing around with that for some time tonight, quite possibly until I get it working. I don’t know how long that is going to take, but let’s hope it won’t take all night. If I get the motivation, I’ll update.
