What’s he complaining about anyway? I see he likes modal windows. Modal windows suck. But how could opting out of making certain windows modal result in the kinds of things he’s talking about? Could someone explain or give a bug or something in order for everyone to better understand what this is all about?

It would be nice if people didn’t. However, I note that ranting on planet was actually effective, while posting in the newsgroup wasn’t. Maybe the method of communication makes more of a difference than the ranting and swearing, but I’ve seen the same thing happen before.

Asking people not to rant is fine, but responding before they get to that point (whether that point is the cursing or reporting bugs via planet.m.o) would probably be more effective…

Shawn, you can be assured that at least I don’t listen much such people. Actually, I haven’t even read this post from start to end as he lost me very early with what he writes, mostly because we had that discussion before in SeaMonkey newsgroups and I already knew where he was getting to.

As a project coordinator, I unfortunately have to read a lot of such posts as I need to get a feeling of what directions our community likes and dislikes – esp. in a niche project like SeaMonkey one needs to evaluate almost every single piece of feedback. Still, we know that the satisfied silent majority of users is not much represented in our channels and need to take that into account.

The topic of modal windows is always interesting to me though, as I’d like to understand the motivation of people who like those annoying things, get to the heart of that motivation and see if it would still fit into the other model which I feel to be better overall.

I think the real problem is that Mozilla has become too large and has no real good way to communicate with users about it’s products. So a user frustrated with something they have come to depended on finds themselves with way to resolve their issue many times except to rant in different locations of the Mozilla community that is not productive for anyone.

I think there needs to be a website that addresses this and makes users feel like they are heard by Mozilla in some way shape or form.

This is why being able to export planet into a feed reader is such a nice thing. You can simply drop those that prefer to vomit all over civil and intelligent discourse and be done with it.
